The buttery cookie base is infused with orange juice and orange zest to make it sweet and soft. Big chocolate chunks are studded throughout the cookie, then a few flakes of sea salt on top bring all of the flavors together. These will be a huge hit at your holiday cookie exchange!

Since it's the holidays I decided to make one of my very favorite cookie recipes, these Orange Chocolate Chunk Cookies with Sea Salt. I have a weakness for the chocolate and orange combination and I wish there were more of it around.

I mean the chocolate oranges at Christmas time and the orange jelly sticks just aren't cutting it for me (I'm not a big fan of either. I wish they offered better quality chocolate for the chocolate oranges and the sticks are just too much for me. I'm probably just too picky, I know).

Orange, Chocolate Chunk and Sea Salt Cookies | Cooking Classy

Orange Chocolate Chunk Cookies

One cookie I do love that is always available though, are those Orange Milanos (one day I'll get around to making those homemade because they're amazing, so I can only imagine how good they'd be fresh).

These, however, are my favorite use of the orange and chocolate combination, because it adds in another of my favorite things, chocolate chip cookies.

These cookies are chewy, generously sized (as every chocolate chip cookie should be) and they're decadently delicious! They have lightly crisp outsides and soft and tender insides.

Soft and sweet sugar cookies are elevated with the bright flavor of fresh orange juice and zest from orange peels, then topped with a layer of orange cream cheese frosting. The result is a yummy twist on the best of all orange desserts—orange creamsicles!

I try not to post to things that are so similar right in a row, one after another. BUT, we'll let sugar cookies be the exception. My last post was Samoa Sugar Cookies and I'm obsessed with them (how could I not be? They are two of my favorite cookies combined into one). I decided while it was still on my mind I'd try out the other version I've been wanting to post, these Orange Creamsicle Sugar Cookies.

These are bright, sweet, and delicious!

Oranges and cream is such a blissfully fresh and excitingly delicious flavor combination. It's one of my favorite combinations. Let me rephrase that, basically, any fresh fruit with cream is my favorite combination. Which may explain my weakness for orange creamsicle flavored anything.

Orange Creamsicle Cupcakes

I saw the orange cupcakes at Martha Stewart and decided it would be perfect for these.

I made a few small changes to my orange cupcake recipe such as removing the vanilla beans (simply because I wanted the orange flavor to shine through), then I increased the orange flavor by adding orange extract and increasing the orange zest. When you love orange, you go hard!

I also replaced the frosting with my own Vanilla Buttercream because it's my favorite buttercream recipe, it even reminds me of ice cream so I figured it would make an excellent fit. Trust me—you're going to love this orange buttercream frosting. Plus, you gotta have the pretty swirls you get when you pipe frosting atop the cupcakes. I didn't add food coloring, but if you want a more vibrant orange frosting just add some coloring.

Too sweet for you? Give this a try with cream cheese frosting. Not sweet enough? Whip a little more powdered sugar and a drizzle of milk into your stand mixer with the frosting before you move it to the piping bag.

I liked the contrasting color of green or teal for the cupcake liners, but a fun and fruity color or citrus pattern would be great for a party. I also like to garnish with a small wedge of actual orange, but orange jellies are cute too. I may try this recipe with an orange curd filling.

These cupcakes are simply fantastic. I love how the cupcake recipe contains heavy cream. It's not too often you come across a cupcake recipe that contains cream in the batter (sour cream, sometimes!). It makes all the difference, and the result is a show-stopper.

It gives these cupcakes such a delightful texture, with a dense and perfectly moist crumb.

This is a charming cupcake that may just become one of your favorites. Enjoy!

Orange-Lover Recipes to Try

There's something about orange—it just pairs so well with so many different flavors! When it's peak citrus season I'm always searching for ways to enjoy the fresh fruit. If you're an orange lover, I have lots of great recipes for you to try. Let me know which ones you love!

Orange Creamsicle Cupcakes

A soft and tender, fresh orange flavored cupcake finished with a sweet vanilla buttercream frosting.

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup salted butter (, softened)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp finely grated orange zest ((from about 1 1/2 oranges))
  • 2 large eggs
  • 3/4 cup heavy cream ((if you want a lighter texture use half and half))
  • 1/4 cup fresh orange juice
  • 1 1/2 tsp orange extract
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Vanilla Buttercream Frosting, (recipe HERE)
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt, set aside.

  2. In a large mixing bowl, using an electric hand mixer set on medium-high speed, blend together butter, granulated sugar and orange zest until pale and fluffy, about 3 - 4 minutes.

  3. Mix in eggs one at time, blending until combine after each addition. Measure out cream into a liquid measuring cup, stir in orange juice, orange extract and vanilla extract.

  4. With hand mixer set on low speed and working in 3 separate batches, blend in flour mixture alternating with cream mixture, beginning and ending with flour mixture and mixing just until combine after each addition.

  5. Divide batter among 14 paper lined muffin cups, filling each cup 3/4 full. Bake in preheated oven 23 - 25, rotating muffin tins once halfway through baking, until toothpick inserted into center comes out clean.

  6. Remove from oven and allow to cool several minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool.

  7. Cool completely then frost with Vanilla Buttercream Frosting and garnish with an small orange slice if desired (just before serving). Store in an airtight container at room temperature.

*If you want the pilled high amount of frosting then you will likely want to make about 3/4 of the Vanilla Buttercream recipe. If you don't want a ton of frosting then 1/2 of the recipe should be enough.

Orange Cranberry Chocolate Chip Cookies https://www.cookingclassy.com/orange-cranberry-chocolate-chip-cookies/ https://www.cookingclassy.com/orange-cranberry-chocolate-chip-cookies/#comments Thu, 13 Dec 2012 16:54:00 +0000 https://www.cookingclassy.com/2012/12/orange-cranberry-chocolate-chip-cookies/ Orange Cranberry Chocolate Chip Cookies are the perfect holiday cookie with their delicious seasonal flavors! You get bright citrus, sweet cranberries and rich chocolate bits. They're a complex and fantastic cookie for the holidays and beyond!

Chocolate Chip Cookies with Orange and Cranberry

What's my favorite part of the holidays? The food, family, friends and the holiday parties of course! And would there be any holiday parties without the food? The more I become acquainted with food, the more I come to realize how much it has to offer.

Not only does it give us the constant nourishment we need to live our daily lives but it brings us together. It builds friendships. It also opens a world of opportunity to experiment with exciting flavors and try new recipes. That's one thing I love about food, it never has to be boring and there are limitless combinations of what can be created.

Another great thing about food is its array of seasonal flavors. I like how there is a rotation of fresh seasonal produce to keep things exciting.

Orange Cranberry Chocolate Chip Cookies

Winter can seem to lack quite as much abundance of fresh fruit, but the one fruit I'm glad I can always count on during the Christmas season is the plethora of perfectly ripe, deliciously sweet Navel oranges (the kind that don't lead me to pulling a sour face immediately after sinking my teeth into the first bite).

When you really get a good orange, it's so juicy and sweet it could nearly pass as candy. Oranges are definitely my favorite citrus fruit and their flavor complements a chocolate chip cookie like no other. The citrus-y zip hugs the semi-sweet chocolate chips.

These cookies are like those chocolate oranges you buy around the holidays, but in thick and chewy cookie form! Then when you add cranberries into the equation, you'll feel like this cookie is the season’s best friend. If you ask me, cranberry, orange and chocolate were meant to be together.

This cookie is perfect to bake and give as a gift, because how many people do you know that don't like chocolate chip cookies? And how fun would it be to give a chocolate chip cookie that had such a flavorful and exciting twist? I know I'd be happy to get a plateful. Enjoy!

Orange Cranberry Chocolate Chip Cookies

The perfect holiday cookie with their delicious seasonal flavors! You get bright citrus, sweet cranberries and rich chocolate bits.

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp cornstarch
  • 3/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 cup salted butter (, softened)
  • 1 cup packed light-brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp orange zest
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 1 tsp orange extract*
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup dried cranberries (, roughly chopped)
  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, cornstarch, baking powder, baking soda and salt. In the bowl of an electric stand mixer fitted with paddle attachment, whip together butter, light-brown sugar, granulated sugar and orange zest on medium-high speed until pale and fluffy about 4 minutes.
  2. Mix in egg and egg yolk. Stir in orange extract and vanilla extract. With mixer set on low speed, slowly add in dry ingredients and mix just until combine. Mix in chocolate chips and cranberries (if you want them to look like those pictured, I set aside some of the chocolate chips and cranberries to gently press into the top of the cookie dough balls before baking).
  3. Scoop dough out 2 Tbsp at a time and gently roll into balls, then place onto Silpat lined cookie sheets spacing them 2-inches apart. Bake in preheated oven about 10 - 11 minutes. Allow to cool on cookie sheet two minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool. Store in an airtight container.
  4. *Orange extract can be found near the vanilla extract in most grocery stores or supermarkets.

Orange Creamsicle Truffles https://www.cookingclassy.com/orange-creamsicle-truffles/ https://www.cookingclassy.com/orange-creamsicle-truffles/#comments Tue, 24 Apr 2012 17:07:00 +0000 https://www.cookingclassy.com/2012/04/orange-creamsicle-truffles/ Orange Creamsicle Truffles are an orange lover's dream come true! These decadent treats have a bright orange goodness paired with a creamy, rich white chocolate flavor to compliment them.

Truffles are such an elegant and impressive dessert. They are great for the dessert table at parties or delivering in cute containers for holidays. I love that truffles are tiny and provide that visual variety from cookies, bars, cakes, pies, or cupcakes. Chocolate or mint truffles are the most common flavors... but who says we can't go light and fruity?

Orange Creamsicle Truffles

Orange Creamsicle Truffles

I'm a huge fan of Orange Creamsicles and orange-flavored treats in general. During the spring and summer months I just can't get enough of fruity, sweet, ice cream-inspired flavors. Why not try the decadent truffle in fruit flavors? I'm so glad I tried it because it completely changed the way I think about truffles.

These truffles have the vibrant flavor of orange from zest and extract, with the richness of white chocolate and the sweet, dusty finish of powdered sugar to bring it all together. They're the first thing everyone reaches for, and everyone ends up licking their fingers and asking for more!

Orange Desserts

Another reason I love these Orange Creamsicle Truffles is that they're so unique. Everyone who tries them is surprised at the fresh and unexpected flavor of orange in a truffle format. You can adjust your orange flavoring to be stronger or lighter depending on your taste, but it's a nice break from rich chocolate flavors.

They're super easy to make and people of all ages will love them! They're great for gifts or parties, or just a weekend treat.

Here are some other Orange Desserts to try:

Orange Chocolate Chip Cookies (tastes just like an Orange Milano, but better!) https://www.cookingclassy.com/orange-chocolate-chip-cookies-tastes-just-like-an-orange-milano-but-better/ https://www.cookingclassy.com/orange-chocolate-chip-cookies-tastes-just-like-an-orange-milano-but-better/#comments Sun, 15 Jan 2012 18:47:00 +0000 https://www.cookingclassy.com/2012/01/orange-chocolate-chip-cookies-tastes-just-like-an-orange-milano-but-better/ Orange Chocolate Chip Cookies that taste just like an Orange Milano? Yes, please! These chocolate orange cookies are easy and delicious—perfect for your Christmas cookie exchange, holiday parties, and fun baking.

These are officially my new favorite cookies!  They are one of the best cookies I've ever eaten!  These taste just like a Pepperidge Farm Orange Milano Cookie, but I think they are even better because they have all the flavors of that cookie but these are soft and chewy rather than crisp and crunchy.

I've been changing up flavors to all my favorite classics lately like Rice Krispie Treats and Oatmeal, so I decided it was time for a change with the Chocolate Chip Cookie.  So, I came up with this recipe.  I don't know if there could be a better upgrade.  These cookies are a must-try!  Enjoy.

Orange Chocolate Chip Cookies - Milano style!

Orange Chocolate Chip Cookies

Instructions

Start by preheating your oven and stirring together your dry ingredients. Then use the paddle attachment with your stand mixer to cream together your unsalted butter and sugar until fluffy and smooth. Next, you'll add in the eggs, fresh orange zest, and vanilla.

Carefully add your flour mixture and chocolate chunks to complete your cookie dough. I use a mix of milk and semi-sweet chocolate chips, but I might try some dark chocolate chunks next time. I like to use a cookie scoop to form the cookie dough balls, and you can chill the mixture or simply bake straight from room temperature.

Be sure to line your baking sheet with parchment paper or silicone mats, and bake according to the instructions. Immediately remove your orange chocolate cookies from your baking tray to a cooling rack.

PS Just be sure you don't skip out on the orange extract or the orange zest, if you leave one out you won't get that incredible, zesty orange flavor.  They are the key ingredients of this cookie recipe. If you like even more citrus flavor you can add a splash of orange juice.

You should be able to find the orange extract in the spice section of the grocer/supermarket, it's about $3-$6 and well worth it.

You may also like to try Oranges and Cream Cookies, they taste just like an orange creamsicle and they are made from the same dough as these cookies.
